The world’s foremost tech CEO has stirred up conversation regarding how illegal migrants are counted in the U.S. census, and the impact it is having on the democratic process.

Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has taken to his social media platform, X, to accuse blue states of having an unfair political advantage due to the recent historic rates of illegal immigrants arriving in the U.S.

Criticizing the Census

On Saturday he pointed to the census system which considers undocumented immigrants as part of the “voting” population, even though they are not eligible to vote.

What America Doesn’t Know

“Most people in America don’t know that the census is based on a simple headcount of people (including illegals) not just citizens,” the X owner shared with his followers.

Shifting Political Power

He continued, pointing out that “This shifts political power and money to states and Congressional districts with the highest number of illegals.”

Callback to 2021

Some believe these comments were inspired by a House Foreign Affairs hearing back in 2021, when Rep. Yvette Clarke, D-N.Y said that she needed “more people in my district just for redistricting purposes.”

Comments Still Ring True

The hearing was called to discuss policy concerning migrant arrivals from Haiti, and since then Clarke’s flippant comments have become a sticking point for critics who want to end the inclusion of illegal immigrants in census counts.

Not Just Musk

Musk certainly isn’t alone in his criticisms, with some Republican Congress members wanting to amend the Constitution based on this issue.

If the amendment is passed, it would require congressional districts to only be apportioned based on citizens. Illegal, undocumented immigrants would not be counted during the process.

Kentucky Rep Speaks

Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky. is one of these Congress members. The Kentucky Representative even took to X to respond to Musk’s post.

“Most Americans Disagree”

“True,” he agreed. “And when they find out, most Americans disagree with the current practice of counting illegals in the census and awarding congressional representation and electoral votes based on illegals.”

The Equal Representation Act

Senate Republicans were also discussing the issue late last month. Sen. Kevin Cramer, R-N.D. announced his sponsorship of the Equal Representation Act.

“Potential for Disproportionate Political Power”

In a press release he said the act was created to “address the inclusion of illegal immigrants in the count for congressional district apportionment and Electoral College votes; highlight the potential for disproportionate political power.”

ICE Data Is Concerning

He also cited data released by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), which showed that rates of “non-detained docket immigration” had risen by 30.3% between the 2022 and 2023 fiscal year.

Discussing the Impact

“The Biden administration’s refusal to secure the southern border and then just allow unfettered entry into the United States by illegal immigrants has far-reaching impacts,” the press release read.

Republicans Fear “Democrat Pawns”

“The Census is the foundation for representation in our political system, and any census that could include non-citizens in the apportionment count is really concerning to me,” it continued.

Illegal immigrants and non-citizens cannot vote and should not be used as pawns as the Democrats redistrict in various states.”

Distinguishing the Groups

He concluded the press release by explaining that while the census should count all people living in the U.S., it should be required to distinguish between those who are U.S. citizens and legal residents and those who are not.

Two Dozen Senators

The act has been endorsed by over two dozen Republican Senators, including Bill Hagerty, R-Tenn., Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., Mike Braun, R-Ind., Katie Britt, R-Ala., and more.

“It Is Unconscionable”

Hagerty has been at the head of efforts to push the proposed legislation and released a press release of his own, stating that it is “unconscionable that illegal immigrants and non-citizens are counted toward congressional district apportionment and our electoral map.”

Not the First Time

Last Saturday’s X post was far from the first time Elon Musk has voiced criticisms of the Biden administration’s handling of the current immigration crisis.

Last week he also shared a link to a 2021 article that covered Biden’s supposed plan to grant legal status to 11 million migrants.

“Simple Yet Effective”

“Biden’s strategy is very simple,” he wrote. “1. Get as many illegals in the country as possible. 2. Legalize them to create a permanent majority – a one-party state. ‘That is why they are encouraging so much illegal immigration. Simple, yet effective.”
