Trump on the Attack as 21 Million Americans Flock to Obamacare, Biden Pushes Forward

An unprecedented surge in health plan enrollments has reignited former President Donald Trump’s commitment to dismantling the program should he secure the GOP nomination once again.

The Biden administration has launched a new campaign applauding the surge in enrollments while also using the occasion to underscore Trump’s persistent resistance.

Brad Woodhouse, the executive director of Protect Our Care, a Democratic-aligned health-care advocacy group, finds it astonishing that the likely GOP nominee is contemplating another repeal attempt of the Affordable Care Act when more Americans are enrolling in it than ever before.

Record-Breaking Surge

The health insurance marketplaces have witnessed a significant uptick in sign-ups – over 5 million new sign-ups since the previous year, making this Obamacare’s third consecutive year of record enrollment.

Rolling Back Pandemic-era Protections

Experts and Biden officials credit this surge partially to states rolling back pandemic-era protections in Medicaid, resulting in millions of Americans being removed from the safety net health program.

President Biden, commenting on the record-breaking enrollment, emphasized, “The American people have made it clear: they don’t want the Affordable Care Act weakened and repealed – they want it strengthened and protected.”

Trump’s Persistent Attacks

Despite the overwhelming public support for the Affordable Care Act, Donald Trump, the frontrunner for the GOP presidential nomination, continues to revive attacks on the health program. Previously, Trump has posted to social media stating, “I don’t want to terminate Obamacare, I want to REPLACE IT with MUCH BETTER HEALTHCARE!!!”

Midwest and South Support

Despite Trump’s persistent opposition, the Affordable Care Act has seen a surge in popularity, especially in Midwestern and Southern states like Ohio and Texas. Enrollment numbers have been buoyed by Republican-led states that, after years of fighting the law, have toned down their criticism.

Medicaid Expansion’s Impact

One key factor contributing to the Affordable Care Act’s growing popularity is its Medicaid expansion, credited with helping millions of low-income Americans gain coverage through government health programs.

Medicaid enrollment rose to nearly 95 million people during the pandemic, primarily due to regulations preventing disenrollment during the covid-era.

Affordability Increases

Health plans under the ACA have unexpectedly become more affordable during Biden’s tenure. The American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 expanded eligibility for ACA health plan subsidies by about 20 percent, and the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 extended those subsidies.

As a result, Democrats state that about 80 percent of shoppers on the ACA’s health insurance marketplaces can now find coverage for less than $10 per month.

Republican Critique

Republicans argue that the program has become overly generous in its subsidies. Researchers at the Paragon Health Institute, a conservative health policy think tank, noted, “The main takeaway of ARPA: if people don’t have to pay anything for an ACA plan, they will finally enroll. This seems more an indictment of the ACA than a victory.”

Ongoing Struggle to Deliver a Comparable Health Plan

Trump, known for his decade-long promise to repeal and replace the ACA, has yet to present a viable health plan that matches the coverage provided at the same or lower cost. This didn’t stop Republicans from attempting to repeal the Act multiple times during Trump’s four years in office, a move that ultimately resulted in failure.

As Obamacare enrollment hits record highs, the political battle over the program’s future intensifies, setting the stage for an important debate in the upcoming elections.
