House Speaker Mike Johnson has taken a firm stance against the Senate’s $95.3 billion foreign aid package due to the lack of security promises on the Southern Border.
Johnson’s Warning to Senate
Johnson issued a stern warning, asserting that the Senate’s foreign aid bill, lacking key border security elements, won’t see the light of day on the House floor if it secures approval in the upper chamber.
The Border Security Silence
Johnson argued that, in his opinion, the biggest threat to the nation was being ignored, ”the Senate’s foreign aid bill is silent on the most pressing issue facing our country.”
Johnson’s Security Warning
Johnson urged for more security on the Southern Border, “[In] the absence of having received any single border policy change from the Senate, the House will have to continue to work its own will on these important matters,” Johnson warned.
Trump Echoes Speaker’s Statement
Johnson’s argument that “America deserves better than the Senate’s status quo,” is echoed by right-wing figures like former president Donald Trump, who wants the Senate to remove all Ukraine funding for tighter border security.
Trump’s Disapproval on Foreign Aid
Trump recently said in a rally that he was in conversation with the President of an ally NATO country, where Trump told the President he “would not protect” his country in the event of an invasion from Russia.
Trump Would “Encourage” Invasion
In an attempt to reveal the lack of spending by NATO countries, Trump announced that he would “encourage” the invading country to “do whatever the hell they want” because they didn’t contribute financially to their own defense.
Potential Trump Impeachment
“All Republicans should oppose its passage,” were the words of Ohio Republican Sen. J.D. Vance as he argued that passing the Ukraine funding bill could see the impeachment of Trump if he wins the election.
Trump’s Hands Tied
Vance argued that the legislation was an attempt to catch Trump out if he won the election, “The supplemental represents an attempt by the foreign policy blob/deep state to stop President Trump from pursuing his desired policy.”
Vance’s Warning to Republicans
Vance said that if Trump went against the bill as President, it would “provide grounds to impeach him and undermine his administration.”
First Compromise Bill Rejected
The first bill, which was negotiated for months, attempted to compromise between foreign aid and border security.
Still, Speaker Johnson said that the bill would be “dead on arrival” if it came to his office after Trump’s stern criticism.
Uncertain Future for Ukraine Aid
Backing Donald Trump’s sentiments, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene threatened action against Johnson if foreign aid was passed, meaning the fate of Ukraine could be in the hands of Russia without appropriate foreign aid.
Changing Tides
Senate leaders responded to the GOP backlash by separating the foreign aid bill from border security legislation. Still, Johnson rejected this move, calling it “an immigration bill, not a border security bill.”
Schumer Laughs off Republican Package
Top Democrat and Senate Leader Chuck Schumer claimed that the House Republican’s proposal last year for increased security on the Southern Border was “woefully inadequate” and “totally unserious.”
Republicans Demand Security
“House Republicans were crystal clear from the very beginning of discussions that any so-called national security supplemental legislation must recognize that national security begins at our own border,” argued Speaker Johnson.
Demands for Accountability
Johnson accused President Biden of not doing enough to prevent immigrants from crossing the Southern Border despite having the power to do so, “The president of the United States has the authority right now to fix this crisis,” he argued.
“They Could Stop This”
“They [the Biden Administration] could stop this. They could stop the flow immediately. But they don’t want to,” argued Speaker Johnson.
